So you're wanting to become a .NZ Registrar and not sure what's involved, this page is designed to provide a little information and provide you with
an estimated cost for setting up and getting it going and the alternatives.
To become a .NZ registrar with the DNC you have to meet the following requirements:
Pay a one-off, non-refundable application fee of $3000+GST.
Under go a credit check.
Demonstrate that you have the technical skills.
Demonstrate that you have a customer support services, billing, etc.
Permit Internet NZ to carry out third party checks.
Submit your Terms and conditions to Internet NZ for review.
Develope and program an interface to connect to the .NZ SRS.
The above lists a few things required to become an Authorized .NZ Registrar but is not limited to the above, for a full list, we suggest going to the

One thing people don't realize is that you cannot just have a simple interface to register/renew/update domains, you have to program a system that
allows your users to maintain their domains themselves, at the same time you have to be strict in the way it's done for security reasons and also to
ensure you meet all terms and conditions set out by the DNC.
A system such as ours took many programming hours, the cost exceeded $15 000 just
to connect to the SRS and perform basic tasks, but enough for us to go live and for our clients to maintain their own domain names. We've since come
a long way, integrated an API, a reseller site and many more features.

Due to the cost envolved in becoming a registrar and the small margin of profit made on domain names, we've come up with 2 solutions which are
much more cost effective. The creteria is simple, so long as you have an understanding of domain names, agree to our Terms and Conditions and the .NZ Policies we're sure we can assist you in
selling domain names under your own branded name.
API Access
API Access is free to anyone, you may use your existing billing system to interface to us over our API to do all the functions of a registrar, you
will receive pricing based on the amount of active domains you have with us, see our pricing page.
Reseller Solution
With our reseller solution, we provide you with PHP files and a MySQL structure to replicate our AffordableDomains site, you're then able to change
the look, layout and design of the interface to suit your needs. When a user signs up to your "mirror" or "replicated" site, their details are stored
on your server in your database, all payments are directed to you and you set your own pricing structure.
If a user registers a domain, they are charged by your mirror site, the transaction then gets set to us over our API interface and the domain is
registered under your account with AffordableDomains, meaning you have access to maintain & bill your customers directly. Basically, you get the
entire functionality of our system (AffordableDomains) but rather than connecting back to the NZ SRS you are interfacing with us instead.
There is a once off fee of $450+GST for the reseller PHP code, this then entitles you to domain pricing of $21.00+GST per domain.
Registrar Solution
Following our Reseller Solution, our Registrar Solution gives you access to do everything we have. We will provide you the full source code to
AffordableDomains.co.nz , the reseller API code to allow your resellers to connect back to your site, the WHMCS module and API, basically everything
we have developed till purchase date. Once you have this code, you can then register to become a Registrar with the DNC to become a registrar, we suggest only buying this code once you have been authorized to be a registrar by the DNC, this will
ensure you're not wasting money buying software when the DNC may decline your registrar request.
The cost of the software is priced well below what we have paid to develope it, at $11 999.00 (excl GST), you're basically getting it at half our
cost. Provided you're accepted by the DNC to become an Authorized .NZ Registrar, you will be paying $18+GST per domain and you'll be able to set
your own pricing from within our software.
Extras
Should you require additional programming or features to be added to the system, or for us to assist in integrating code to your current billing
systems, we should be able to assist at $150+GST per hour or an agreed price for a project where enough details are provided.
In all cases of the above, we can provide hosting of your NZ SRS on either our shared or a dedicated solution.
